9th.com proudly announce the ACA33 America’s Cup Class Racer for Second Life.

Using a physical vehicle, and artistically created sculpted prim architecture, the ACA33 Racer offers the best of both worlds – *realistic* sailing for you and up to 5 crew members in a beautifully rendered, fully detailed model of the America’s Cup Class racing yacht.
Features of the ACA33 Racer include:
– Can be sailed either solo or in collaboration with a crew.
– Realistic sailing. Based on the ingenious sailing mechanics originally devised by Kanker Greenacre and adapted specifically for the ACA33 Racer, it *really sails* using the SL wind. Voice or HUD commands trim the sails – jib and main – individually for optimal performance under sail. Wind shadowing and leebowing, protest shouting, heeling, drifting, in irons — all the sailing fun and excitement – it’s in there.
– 3 Onscreen HUDs: The ACA33 comes with 3 sailing HUDs. 2 are full featured – one vertically oriented, the other horizontal as per your preference, designed with the look and feel of the digital instrumentation of the real life America’s Cup Class boats, provides button control for the common boat handling commands and display of environmental conditions. The full featured HUD allows fine tuned control over each sail, allowing the seasoned skipper access to such advanced sailing concepts as wing and wing, jib backfill, etc. ( a reminder: if you feel the HUD takes up too much screen space, it can rescaled down to nearly 1/2 of it’s default size). The last HUD is the minimal info-only HUD, specifically geared for the racers who wish to control the ACA33 racer with chat/gesture commands.

– Customizable. A modifiable script for changing the default camera location and angle. Independently adjustable poses in the multi-crew boat so you can customise it to specifically fit your crew’s avatars! Modify permissions allows you to make your ACA33 Racer truly your own.
– Artificial wind strength and direction commands for overriding the sometimes fluky SL winds.
– SLSF racewind compatibility, catches Race Wind automatically.
– Wind shadowing and leebowing: Your ACA33 will slow as a result of your position in relation to other boats in the fleet and the position of the wind. Removing yourself from your opponent’s wind shadow or the dirty wind spilled off the back of their mainsail will allow you to bring the boat back up to your optimum speed. Windshadowing reduces the wind by varying amounts out to a range of 65 meters!
– Protest shouting: You are free to either say “protest” or to use a gesture to say it for you. The ACA33 will listen for your call and shout the protest out loud for all to hear as required under the sailing rules.
– Accommodations for your crew in custom designed full motion animations positioned about the cockpit and deck. Yes, of course we don’t use those pesky poseballs anymore!.
– Since sim crossings can be unpredictable, Copy and modify permissions.
Main Components:
ACA33 Racer – The entire boat is now in one, single package. 3 versions are provided in the box – a lean, mean, no compromises solo racer, a multi crew version that carries the skipper and up to 5 crew on 11 possible poses, and a non scripted no lag display boat for showing off at home!
*PLEASE NOTE! To re-emphasize, please understand the ACA33 Racer is a ridable, physical vehicle. You cannot move around on the boat while underway!

SAILING THE AMERICA’S CUP RACER
Thank you for your purchase of the “ACA33 America’s Cup Class Racer”, the official boat of the America’s Cup in Second Life. Your ACA Racer has been designed for maximum SL sailing realism – from appearance to operation to sensation. We’re sure you’ll have as much enjoyment sailing her as we did putting her together.
Skipper and Crew
——————-
The ACA Racer can be sailed either solo or with the assistance of a crew. In that case the skipper is typically responsible for casting off, steering and mooring and the crewmembers for maintaining the optimum set of the sails depending on boat heading and wind direction. As the mainsail and jib are set separately, these tasks could be assigned to two individual crew members. The HUD object is copy and transfer permissioned, so recruit *your* crew by dropping this HUD on them.
If you want to drop a copy of the HUD on someone else so that they may help you sail as described above, please do the following.
- Rez the HUD inworld.
- You will see the message on the chatline “ACA33 HUD (<your name>’s boat): Channel burned in for <your name>”
- Take the HUD back into inventory.
- The HUD will now be titled “ACA33 HUD (<your name>’s boat)
- Give that copy of the HUD to your crewmember (explain to them it’ll be good for *your* boat only)
Lets Go!
———
Please refer to the included notecard “Quick Start” for the basic initial operation steps.
Key Controls:
————–
- Use the <left> and <right> arrow keys to steer the boat.
- Use the <page up> and <page down> arrows to let the sails in/out
Voice Commands (all preceded by the /1 channel designator):
——————
(please note: some of these commands are different from those you may be used to on the Flying Tako)
Unless you are using mouselook, it is recommended that all sail handling be done through the HUD
- “raise x” — where x is “jib” or “main” — raise the sails and begin sailing. The raise command by itself raises all the sails.
- “lower x” — where x is “jib” or “main” — lower the sails and stop sailing. Note that the boat will continue to drift. The lower command by itself lowers all the sails.
- “moor” — lower all sails, come to a complete halt and reset the boat to non-physical state.
- “m x” — sheet in or out the mainsail by x degrees (a positive number sets the sail towards port, a negative number towards starboard).
- “j x” — sheet in or out the jib by x degrees (a positive number sets the jibs towards port, a negative number towards starboard).
- “gybe x” — where x is “jib” or “main” — sheet the sails, using the same angle, to the opposite side of the boat. The gybe command by itself gybes all the sails.
- “tack x” — does exactly the same thing as gybe
- “showsail” — raise the sails for display, without initiating the sailing physics
- “id xxxx” — where xxxx is *up* to 4 characters. Appends the characters to the boat name for regatta identification. Adds characters if missing, changes characters if they are already present and different.
The SET commands
————————-
The following command – set – is used for boat configuration options which are saved between sailing sessions. The set commands are as follows (don’t forget the /1 prefix):
- “set pp” — toggles the boat phantom – perfect for navigating under those low bridges
- “set wind” — see discussion below.
The set command by itself lists all the parameters the boat has stored:
- /1 set
- [8:15] ACA33 Racer: WindDir: 0
- [8:15] ACA33 Racer: WindSpeed: 10.000000
- [8:15] ACA33 Racer: WindDir+-: 0
- [8:15] ACA33 Racer: WindSpeed+- : 0.000000
- [8:15] ACA33 Racer: Wind Change Rate: 0.000000
- [8:15] ACA33 Racer: Sail Alpha: 100
The SET Wind command in detail
—————————————
The /1 set wind command turns on an artificial wind that overrides the fluky SL winds). It allows input of skipper defined wind parameters. (PLEASE NOTE! The syntax has changed from earlier ACA32/33 releases)
- /1 set wind dir speed dir+- speed+- rate (all parameters separated by spaces)
Example:
- /1 set wind 225 8 20 2 1
As with all the set commands, the boat will save your settings into it’s “firmware” for future sailing sailing sessions (as long as you save the vehicle back into inventory).
The parameters explained:
- dir: sets average wind direction in degrees, CCW from due East. Must be a number between 0 and 359. (in SL, dir 0 is wind direction due East, dir 90 is wind direction due North. dir 180 is wind direction due West, 270 is wind direction due South, etc.)
- speed: sets average wind speed in m/second. Must be a number between 1 and 50
- dir+-: sets range over which wind direction will vary from the average wind direction, in degrees. Must be a number between 0 and 45.
- speed+-: sets range over which wind speed will vary from average wind speed. Must be a number no greater than the average wind speed.
- rate: sets rate at which wind speed and direction will vary, +/-. Default is 1. A rate of 2 will double the rate of change over the default rate.
Only the first two parameters are required: /1 set wind 225 8 .
The command will continue to use the range and rate parameters previously set.
Racewind Windsetters Interaction
—————————————–
The ACA33 is completely compatible with the SLSF Race Wind system used in yachting regattas throughout SL.
Upon hearing a windsetter’s broadcast, a dialog indicating the windsetter source, it’s broadcast settings and 3 options are presented to the skipper.
1. The Accept this option loads the racewind settings and turns off any further windsetter listens (and prompting) until the skipper stands and re-sits. The settings can be overwritten by the skipper with a /1 set wind command.
2. The Ignore this option does not load the settings, but keeps the racewind listen active. Be prepared to get dialoged by those persistant windsetters!
3. The Ignore all option does not load the settings, keeps the current boat wind settings and turns off any further windsetter listens (and prompting). It remains in effect as in the “Accept this” option.
The HUD:
———–
The attachment provides button control for the common boat handling commands:

- jib raise/lower/sheet/tack
- mainsail raise/lower/sheet/tack
- moor
The following sailing status indicators:
- -2 apparent wind direction displays – analog and digital
- -Wind Speed: wind speed in knots
- -Wind Source: either SL, Set by skipper, or Racewind
- -SLSF racewind compatibility: catches Race Wind automatically
- -Boat Speed: speed of the boat over the sea bed in knots
- -Depth: depth of water below the boat in meters. Your ACA Racer draws 4M, so -keep an eye on that
- -Sheet angle set for each sail
The ACA33 comes with 3 sailing HUDs. 2 are full featured – one vertically oriented, the other horizontal as per your preference ( a reminder: if you feel the HUD takes up too much screen space, it can rescaled down to nearly 1/2 of it’s default size). The last HUD is the minimal info-only HUD, specifically geared for the racers who wish to control the ACA33 racer with chat/gesture commands.
The full featured HUDs have within their contents a notecard called settings.ini. Edit this card if you wish to change:
the number of degrees the sails are set with each click:
DegreesPerClick=5
*******************************************************************************************
PLEASE NOTE!!!! You may be used to ACA32/33 HUD with a “sync” button it .This HUD release do not have this. If you want to drop a copy of the HUD on someone else so that they may help you sail her as described above in “Skipper and Crew”, please do the following.
- Rez the HUD inworld.
- You will see the message on the chatline “ACA33 HUD (<your name>’s boat): Channel burned in for <your name>”
- Take the HUD back into inventory.
- The HUD will now be titled “ACA33 HUD (<your name>’s boat)
- Give that copy of the HUD to your crewmember (explain to them it’ll be good for *your* boat only)
*******************************************************************************************
Camera Setting
——————-
Select the boat and look in the Contents. There is a script called CameraPos that contains the settings for the camera view. Play around with these numbers:
- vector CameraPos = <-20,5,7>;
to select the view you find most agreeable. They represent the camera placement in meters behind, to the side, and above the boat. Save the script when done.
Crew position adjustment
—————————–
Each crew position in the ACA33 can be adjusted to suit an individual avatar.

You will see that there are a number of pose positions available (but only 5 can be used at any one time). If you right click the boat and select “edit”, the entire boat will be highlighted. Check the “Edit linked parts” box in the edit window, and left click the position you want to update according to the picture above. Select the “Contents” Tab in the edit window. You will see 3 items in this window…the pose, the “sit” script, and the “sit config” notecard. Double click the sit config notecard and you will find it is quite apparent what to update. If in doubt, or you lack confidence in doing this, any builder should be able to assist you.
Other Boat Behavior The Skipper Might Find Interesting
——————————————————————-
Downwind logic has been completely rewritten in this version of the sailing scripts – you really will get a performance boost with wing and wing (jib sheeted to the opposite side of the boat as the mainsail when running downwind).
If you find yourself in irons (heading directly into the wind with no momentum), you can always steer out of it. But try doing what you might on a RL sailboat – back up your jib (sheet the jib to the windward side) until it catches the wind and pushes the bow away from it. When you’ve fallen far
enough away, sheet the jib in on the leeward side, raise and trim the rest of your sails, and away you go!
The ACA Racer is, naturally, completely compatible with the Race Wind system used in yachting regattas throughout SL.
Wind shadowing and leebowing: Your ACA33 will slow as a result of your position in relation to other boats in the fleet and the position of the wind. Removing yourself from your opponent’s wind shadow or the dirty wind spilled off the back of their mainsail will allow you to bring the boat back up to your optimum speed. Windshadowing reduces the wind by a variable amount depending on the distance between boats…up to 65 meters away..
Protest shouting: You are free to either say “protest” or to use a gesture to say it for you. The ACA33 will listen for your call and shout the protest out loud for all to hear as required under the sailing rules.
Rezzing Your America’s Cup Racer Boat Inworld
——————————————————————-
For display purposes, there is a display boat in the box. This boat is completely without scripts and totally inert, plus it is VERY low prim. You can adjust the rotation and position of the boat while it is inworld.

Hi Florencia,
I just bought an ACA 33. I don’t know how soon I will be able to find the time to learn how to sail it, but in the meantime – since it is so beautiful – I would like to display it with its sails up. I know how to place the attachment in the landscape, but not how to show the sails, and I haven’ t been able to find that information.
Thank you,
Patch
Drop your ACA32 Racer on the water, sit on the skipper’s red ball and issue the /1 showsail chat command. Then, drop your attachment on the water and align it with the racer using the edit tool.
Hi Florencia,
I just bought an ACA 33, and for some reason I don’t have a red skipper’s ball. Is there any way I can have you provide me with one?
Thank you very much. This boat is magnificent!
Pi
Please issue this command in chat:
/1 show
Let me know if that worked. Cheers, Flo
Hello Flo,
Someone told me there were templates available for us custom paint our ACA 33s. If so, could you direct me to this site? Thank in advance.
